Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden Wedding in Henrico, VA | A Nature-Loving Couple’s Winter Wedding in RVA

A wedding couple dance under the pergola at night outside of the Robin's Room

January weddings have a certain kind of magic, soft light, cozy energy, and that quiet anticipation that feels like something beautiful is about to unfold. Steve and Jenny’s wedding day was exactly that. What began as a cloudy winter morning in Richmond slowly transformed into the most radiant celebration, complete with golden sunshine, heartfelt moments, and one wildly fun dance floor.

The morning started at their home, which felt especially meaningful because it’s the place where their everyday love story happens. Steve and Jenny are avid horticulture hobbyists and passionate bird watchers. Their backyard greenhouse is basically their happy place so of course I had to incorporate it into the day. Jenny’s gown hung on the greenhouse for her detail photos, surrounded by glass panes and winter greenery. It was simple, personal, and so them.

Upstairs, Steve and his best man were getting ready, adjusting ties and sharing a few nervous laughs over how to tie a bowtie. Downstairs, Jenny, her bridesmaids, and both moms gathered for hair and makeup. The house buzzed with that pre-ceremony energy, equal parts excitement and happy chaos. Photographing couples in their own home always adds a relaxed vibe to the day. No rushing between locations, no unfamiliar surroundings; just comfort and anticipation.

They chose to do their first look right outside their house, and that’s when the skies decided to cooperate. Just as Steve turned around to see Jenny for the first time, the clouds parted and sunshine broke through. It felt perfectly timed, like the universe was giving them a little nod of approval. They laughed, hugged, and took a quiet moment together before the rest of the day unfolded.

Everyone climbed into a sleek black stretch limo from Richmond Limousine and headed toward one of the most beloved wedding venues in Richmond VA. There’s something about arriving together that builds excitement – music playing, windows down, everyone ready for the celebration ahead.

By the time we arrived at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, the sunshine had fully committed. Even in January, the gardens offer incredible texture and charm. The curving brick sidewalks, open spaces, and reflecting pond create such beautiful lines and movement in photos. With sunset hitting around 5pm, we took full advantage of that golden window all while birds chirped among the limbs.

Winter light in Richmond is soft and glowy without being harsh. Steve and Jenny strolled along the pathways, pausing near the reflecting pond as the sky shifted into warm tones. The glass conservatory in the background caught the light in the prettiest way as well as some twinkling lights wrapped around the trees adding a bit of magic. It’s easy to see why this is one of the most iconic wedding venues in Richmond VA. Every season offers something unique, and winter has a romantic calmness that feels extra intimate.

As evening settled in, guests began arriving for the ceremony held in the atrium lobby. The glass architecture allowed the last hints of daylight to filter in while guests gathered among botanical displays. It was such a fitting setting for a couple who genuinely loves plants and nature.

Following the ceremony, cocktail hour took place in the hallway between the lobby and café. Guests mingled while exploring botanical exhibits and educational displays about the gardens. It felt less like a standard cocktail hour and more like an immersive experience – perfectly aligned with Steve and Jenny’s personalities.

Dinner was hosted in the Robin’s Room, where warm lighting and joyful chatter filled the space. Marylee Marmer Events team transformed the room into a rich, candlelight oasis with a bit of death-defying act of repurposing the alter backdrop to frame the sweetheart table.  Once dinner was wrapped, everyone made their way toward the café area for dancing, toasts, and cake cutting. That’s when the party truly kicked off.

The DJ absolutely understood the assignment. The playlist jumped from mosh-pit anthems (yes, there was friendly slamming and head banging) to nostalgic throwbacks that pulled every guest onto the dance floor. One-minute friends were bouncing off each other in the most enthusiastic way, and the next, everyone was singing at the top of their lungs. It was high energy, carefree, and completely unforgettable.

As a Wedding Photographer in Richmond, VA couples trust to document every season, from cozy winter weddings to vibrant spring celebrations, days like this are such a reminder that weather doesn’t define the magic. Connection does. Personality does. A couple’s willingness to fully embrace their story does.

Steve and Jenny’s wedding wasn’t about perfection; it was about authenticity. It was about incorporating their love of horticulture and dancing like nobody was watching. From a cloudy morning to a golden sunset and an electric dance floor, their January wedding proved that even in the quietest season, love still blooms in the boldest ways.
