Inspired by all the best things fall has to offer, Erin and Kyle envisioned a fall celebration with a color palette of burgundy red and navy surrounded by hanging candles and lush greenery. The backdrop of Wolftrap Farm in Gordonsville, VA provided the coziest atmosphere for them and their guests that traveled from all over the world to relax the entire weekend on a horse farm, just like the one that Kyle grew up on.
The Story
Kyle was on a study abroad in England, I was in my first year of my undergraduate degree, we met on my first day there when our student halls of residence held a social gathering. Kyle was actually trying to chat-up my roommate that night – luckily for us that didn’t go particularly well, and we hit it off, after a few more gatherings he became quite persistent about asking me out on a date. Our wedding was planned for the weekend marking 10 years since we had first met.
The Proposal
I had planned this big graduation trip after completing my pharmacy degree – I had spent so much of my life in school and was so excited to have graduated – we went to hike in the Andes along an alternate (harder) route to Macchu Picchu called the Salkantay trail – it is 5 days of hiking and camping in mountains that ended in the ancient city. After all those days and the better part of the way up Macchu Picchu Mountain we sat down for a snack and Kyle pulls out a ring! He had carried it the whole time on the trail petrified that I would find it digging through his pack for supplies. It was the perfect proposal for us, very laid back and private, but its combined travel, history, the outdoors, and of course food!
The Dress
I had no idea what I wanted when I started, except that I didn’t want to have someone have to hold my dress up when I went to the loo! I tried on a lot of different styles and decided that something a little slimmer and easier to handle might be better, but I also didn’t want to spend thousands on something I would wear once and then never look at. By finding a designer that makes their dresses in the US, picking a design that was simple, and then having my sister create an additional embellishment with the top I think we came out with something perfect for the day and yet completely unique and special to me.
Favorite Moment
Spending the time with everyone eating and chatting and dancing up a storm! It went by very quickly, but was just wonderful
Advice for future couples planning their wedding
Be willing to ask for feedback from guests on the day of your wedding – I gave a very generous tip to a waitstaff that performed abysmally because I had no idea! It’s something that frustrates me to this day because if we’d known as these things were happening, I could have gone to talk to the catering coordinator to fix the issue
